Maybe it is date night, and you want to watch something romantic with your special someone. Or maybe you want to get together with a bunch of your best friends and have a good laugh over a favorite film. Do you want to go out to the theater, or stay in?
Watching movies at home is so much more fun, flexible and affordable than going out. There is a reason why cinema attendance dropped to a 25 year low in 2017.
Here are seven reasons why it is more enjoyable watching movies at home in the comfort of your own place as opposed to going out.
1. It’s Cheaper to Watch Movies at Home
By the end of 2017, the average price for a movie ticket was over $9. Compare that to ten years ago, when it used to cost about two bucks to see a flick.
Going out to the moves is always more than just the cost of admission. You have to buy popcorn, plus a drink and maybe even some candy. Sometimes the concessions end up costing more than the tickets.
Add to that parking and dinner, plus the price of a babysitter. You might end up dropping over a hundred bucks for two people to have dinner and a movie.
Watching a movie at home significantly cuts down on many of these expenses.
2. You Can Go to the Bathroom and Not Miss the Good Stuff
How often has this happened to you: you consume a large soda, and eighty minutes into the film you have to go.
The hero is about to kiss the girl, or the sheriff is about to arrest the criminal. You are climbing over people to get to the aisle, then running down carpeted hallways at the multiplex to get to the restrooms and back in time to see what happens.
When you go to the movies in the theatre, you bother everyone when you whisper, “What did I miss?” And hearing the big reveal is never like experiencing it first hand.
When you watch movies at home, all you have to do is press “pause.”
3. You’re Not Limited to Popcorn
When you watch a movie in a theater, your snacks are generally limited to what they sell, like popcorn and candy. You are discouraged from bringing in goodies from the outside.
Plus, there is the added cost. When you buy popcorn at the movie theatre, you are paying close to a 1200% markup!
If you choose to watch a film in the comfort of your own home, you can cook yourself a steak, or slurp up a homemade hot fudge sundae. You can even enjoy a glass of wine if you like.
You can eat whatever you want, and chances are it will still cost less than a large tub of popcorn and a large drink at the cinema!
4. You Can Rewind if You Miss the Joke
Sometimes in a movie theater, people may be laughing so loudly you miss part of the dialogue. In some showings, the audience becomes so engaged in the film that they start shouting at the screen.
While audience participation can be fun, sometimes you want to actually hear what the actors are saying.
There’s nothing more irritating than the couple behind you arguing when you want to be fully engrossed in a storyline. Or a child crying in the middle of a movie she should never have been taken to in the first place.
If you want to really hear the soundtrack and audio editing of a great film, watch it at home. If you want to catch every line, watch it at home.
If you miss it, you can always rewind and play it over again.
5. You Don’t Have to Fight for a Parking Spot
Getting to the movie theater can be a battle, depending on where you live. It can be hard to find parking, especially on a Saturday night.
If you are seeing a flick at a multiplex, or in a shopping mall, you may be competing with thousands of other people out for the evening.
You may end up parking far away from where you want to end up, which is not ideal if you have mobility problems, or the weather is bad outside. If you park at a meter you may even have to run outside to feed it quarters in the middle of the movie!
On the other hand, if you watch at home you can park in your driveway and enjoy a lovely movie on your DVR or computer. You decide.
6. You Don’t Have to Worry About the Kids
Another reason it’s more fun to watch movies at home is that you don’t have to worry about getting a babysitter, or leaving your kids alone.
Besides the added expense of paying someone to watch your children, you might not feel right about leaving someone you don’t know to take care of your kids, especially if they are little. Or you may want to save your “big night out” for a special occasion like a wedding or company party.
If you choose to watch the movie at home, you can relax knowing your kids are safe upstairs. You might even want to watch a movie with them, creating special family memories.
Kids can watch movies at home lying on your lap, or playing with the dog. You don’t have to worry about them disrupting the experience of the other members of the audience when you watch at home (except yours).
7. You Have Privacy
Some movies you may not want to watch in a theater. Sometimes they are sexy. Sometimes they are terrible movies, but they are fun to watch.
Imagine running into your neighbor or your boss as you come out of a showing of “Fifty Shades of Gray”? Embarrassing!
When you are watching movies at home, you can watch what you want, with whom you want, in whatever way you want. If you want to watch “Frozen” in the nude, you can!
Watching Movies at Home: There’s No Place Like It
Watching movies at home gives you the freedom to rewind, to talk back to the screen, or to sing along. Whether you want to have a romantic interlude or a raucous family laugh fest, stay home and enjoy your films whenever and however you want.
